How to Activate Office 365, Office 2016, or Office 2013

In some cases, Office 365 and Office 2016 activate automatically. If you're not prompted to activate, you can start using Office right away. If Office needs to be activated, you will see on of the screens below for instructions on activation.

If you see "Sign in to set up Office"

If you already subscribe to Office 365, select Sign in. If you bought Office 2016 or Office 2013 as a one-time purchase and you have already redeemed your purchase at Office.com/setup, choose Sign in and Office should detect your purchase.

Office is installed as an Office 365 Home trial. You can activate Office as a 1-month trial of Office 365 Home. You can also buy Office, add Office to an existing Office 365 subscription, or enter a product key from a product key card. If you have an older copy of Office, install that instead.

Office is installed as a one-year subscription or a one-time purchase. A digital Office product key is transmitted to your PC, so you won’t need or receive a printed product key. Activate Office by selecting the Activate button to associate your purchase with a Microsoft account. Activate Office as soon possible. The offer expires 180 days after you activate Windows.

If you see, “Hello, let’s activate Office”

If you see, “Hi, let’s get your office”

This is the setup.office.com page in your web browser. Go here to enter a new product key to install a new copy of Office or to start or renew an Office 365 subscription. You must enter a Microsoft account before you can enter your product key. A Microsoft account is required for Office 365, Office 2016, and Office 2013.

If you see the Activation Wizard

If you install Office 365 or Office 2016 on your own, Office will activate automatically in most cases. You will only see this wizard if Office needs your help to activate.

If you install Office 365 or Office 2016 yourself, Office will activate automatically. You will only see this screen if Office needs your Microsoft account, or work or school account, to activate. Enter your account and password to activate Office.

If you see enter your product key screen

If Office asks for a product key to activate Office, you can sometimes enter your Microsoft account instead. This is the account you used to buy Office or subscribe to Office 365. Just select Sign in with an active account instead and enter the account you used to buy Office or subscribe to Office 365.

If you see “Install limit reached”

If you see this message after you install Office, you have already activated the maximum number of installs your Office 365 subscription supports. You’ll need to deactivate another Office install before you can activate the new Office install.

If you see unlicensed product errors

When Office becomes unlicensed, all editing features are disabled. Office can become unlicensed for a number of reasons. For example, if your Office 365 subscription expires, you must renew your subscription to restore all features of Office. If Office was pre-installed on your new PC, you must start an Office 365 Home trial or buy Office to continue using Office.
