What’s Different about This Edition?
The Ribbon is perhaps the most notable change to Office 2007. Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint get full makeovers, which during your first visit will definitely stand out. The Ribbon keeps drop-down menus, but at the same time makes it even easier to find your commands and functions. Tabs are now available, where you can easily find commands related to what you’re doing.
Microsoft’s new “Fluent UI” powers these functions, allowing relevant commands to appear with the click of a mouse. If you’re creating a graph or a chart in Excel, you can right-click a cell and get formatting options or other commands. Fluent bases its suggestions on the frequency of use and inputs from Microsoft based off popular choices, so you’ll get a blend of unique-to-you options and essential choices. This makes it simpler to find what you’re looking for and saves you time by eliminating the need to dig through drop-down menus to find a single function. Microsoft also gives users the ability to hide the entire ribbon when editing, giving you more space to focus on the content of the document.
Files Names Look a Little Different
Another change users will quickly notice is the new file formats. You’ll notice a Word file go from .doc to .docx, or an Excel file go from .xls to .xlsx. So what is this mysterious “x” file extension all about? First and foremost, it cuts down on the file size, sometimes by 75% of their Office 2003 equivalents. This makes data storage and backup recovery easier, since file types are usually about half the size now.
This file extension also bolsters up security as well, making it harder for macros-based viruses to infect the new file types. The new file format closes backdoors in documents that were previously wide open.
Fortunately, it’s easy to read and edit older formats in these 2007 edition applications, and the new file formats can still be read in older applications.
Other security features come to this newest update of Outlook. Outlook now gets anti-spam filtering options, cleaning up your inbox and keeping things organized. Anti-phishing measures are put in place as well, keeping harmful emails containing malicious links out of your inbox and keeping your network secure from intrusions. Feel confident in your email security with more secure email connections with Microsoft Outlook via Office 2007.
Perhaps a more understated feature is the new themes and graphics that remain consistent from application to application. If you create a nice word document for a memo and want to use the same design element in PowerPoint presentation, you can select the same theme to keep a cohesive and uniform feel to documents across the Microsoft Office application library.
