Add More Access to a Simple-to-Use, Powerful Database

Many businesses spend way too much time looking for the happy medium between quality SQL Server solutions and ease of navigation and administration that makes it possible for their business to get by with minimal technical support.

That time is wasted precisely because the solution is so very clear: the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition. Despite its age, this server is still able to host all the applications and run all the analysis most businesses need, all while removing all the complexity of operation that holds many back from other SQL options.

If your business has already discovered Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition, all that’s left for you to do to maximize your server’s abilities is to provide more access to that server through User CALs.

A User CAL allows one new user to access the server from any device, making it possible to unlock new solutions through that user’s input, no matter how they connect to the server in the first place.

Don’t waste money buying a new SQL Server. Get more from Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition with more User CALs.

Think there’s a better SQL Server product out there for you? Check out our extensive list of SQL Server options, including all required CALs.

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition Features

The Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition makes major improvements across the board, but especially in four key areas: administrator server management, availability, scalability, and security. There are also a number of other major upgrades to use, analysis, and reporting (although some are not available in the Workgroup edition).

Administrator management upgradesThe Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition makes a number of strides in making server management easier to navigate and carry out.

    • SQL Server Management Studio: Previous editions had many server management tools spread across the server. The SQL Server Management Studio brings together all the tools for the SQL Server relational database. You can cover Integration Services, Analysis Services, Reporting Services, and SQL Mobile.

    • SQL Management Objects: These programming objects gives administrators new levels of automation and increased functionality.

    • Increased visibility for database monitoring: Administrators can now see more of what the server is doing. That includes more than 70 internal database activities. Seeing those activities makes it easier to diagnose the server health.

Availability upgradesWith more high availability functions on the server, the better the server’s overall performance improves. There are a number of major improvements in this area, although, unfortunately, many are not available in the Workgroup edition. Still, the upgrades found in this area still offer a lot of server advancement.

    • Dedicated Administrator Connection: When the server stops responding, troubleshooting previous editions was incredibly difficult. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition fixes this by providing a dedicated administrator connection, which allows the administrator to access the server even when it is otherwise non-responsive. This lets you diagnose and troubleshoot.

Scalability upgradesMicrosoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition provides for more scalable on your server, which in turn makes it more flexible, adaptable, and powerful.

    • Snapshot Isolation: Data on an analysis-based database has to regularly be rebuilt, which means users are not seeing the most current data. Snapshot Isolation allows users to view the most recent changes, even to the last row.

Security upgradesOne of the most important areas for any server to remain up-to-date, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition has a number of improvements that make security easier to run and more thorough.

    • Authorization simplified: Manage permissions more easily while still being able to maintain them at the granular level.

    • Authentication expanded: Authentication now includes Kerberos for more security on the server and client ends. Administrators can also set a consistent login policy across all accounts that is similar to Microsoft Windows.

    • Native Encryption: Encryption goes much farther than in previous editions. Now, all client/server communications are encrypted by default, and the server rejects unencrypted communications. Encrypt also exists across the database and is integrated with key management.

Other upgradesUpgrades on Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition provide more use in a number of areas. While the Workgroup edition misses out on major business intelligence enhancements, there are still major upgrades elsewhere to enjoy.

    • Report Builder: Reporting analysis is the main point of doing analysis in the first place, but not everyone is an expert at reporting. Report Builder builds upon Excel and PowerPoint while walking users through the reporting process so that analysis can be reported quickly and easily.

    • SQL Server Mobile 3.0: Improvements in the mobile server include the ability to develop and manipulate databases from a mobile device.

    • XML expanded uses: Databases can flexibly move between XML and relational data. XQuery is included, which allows you to query all XML data.

    • Processor: 500 MHz minimum; 1 GHz recommended
    • RAM: 512 MB minimum; 1 GB or more recommended
    • Available disk space: 350 MB for server system; 390 MB for sample databases
    • CD-ROM Drive
    • Operating System: Windows 2000 Professional; Windows XP Professional; Windows XP Media Edition; Windows XP Tablet Edition
