Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition has many well-thought-out features that small and mid-size organizations need to work in an information-based environment, including easier database management and data application development, virtualization, two-node failover clustering, backup compression, database mirroring, and enhanced data security.

With Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition, Microsoft brought the tools and features that are needed when data, as it is now, becomes an integral part of any organization. But data is just data unless you can effectively use it internally and external to extend and grow your organization’s services or products. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition helps you achieve this goal.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition has been designed with virtualization in mind. With the ability to create virtual instances of your databases, you can drastically improve server and database response time, and you can direct traffic on the server so that a single database doesn’t get bogged down with I/O.

Uptime for server and database resources is critical to any organization’s mission. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition includes several new features that are designed specifically to help make sure that your information is always available.

  • One of these features is two-node failover clustering. A two-node failover cluster involves having two servers (nodes) set up to work with each other so that if one of them fails to be available, the other server takes over transparently to user without any downtime involved. This ensures that all of your SQL server databases, applications, and services are available even when things break.

Another feature in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard that helps assure optimal data availability is database mirroring. This is a technique that lets you create two SQL Server instances that are exactly the same all the time. They can be on the same server or you can have the mirrored database on another server. If the primary database becomes unavailable, you can immediately redirect traffic to the mirrored database without interrupting service to users.

Database mirroring is also a part of a disaster recovery strategy (most organizations that have in-house SQL servers now have a hot standby with the mirrored database and they keep a mirrored database in the cloud as well).

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition also has several new database administration tools that will save time, improve overall server management, and will strengthen the security of your data.

One of these tools is database backup compression. By compressing data, the amount of time that is required to do backups and restores is dramatically reduced.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition now encrypts all data as part of its protection architecture. However, there are a couple of new features give you the ability to further enhance the security of your data. You now have the ability to store all the keys used in your encryption infrastructure, keeping them effectively hidden from potential outside security threats. Additionally, you now have the capability of encrypting an entire database, instead of just pieces of data within it. This not only makes increases the protection of your data, but it also saves time for database administrators.
