Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials 64-bit OEM

Businesses need to be able to use servers to allow employees to work, save, collaborate, and communicate over a single network. That need doesn’t always translate to a simple server solution, however. Servers can be difficult to run and expensive to purchase and maintain.

Microsoft has a solution to these issues with Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. This server provides all the tools small businesses need while making it easier than ever to set up and run the server. New tools allow for users to work locally or remotely, improving server use without requiring any extra effort or technical knowledge on the business’ part.

    What Is R2?

R2 stands for “release 2” and functions as the updated edition of the original Microsoft Windows Server 2012. It includes a number of major upgrades and fixes over the original 2012 edition, but still runs on the same basic operating system, which is why it does not have its own separate release title.

Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 can only function in the 64-bit format.

    What Is the Essentials Edition?

Every Microsoft Windows Server release includes several edition options that provide flexible choices for businesses. These editions have different features and abilities that suit different businesses.

The Essentials Edition in Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 is a slimmed down version of the server that is ideal for small businesses with fewer users and a need for a server that requires less technical knowledge. The Essentials Edition is easy to run and provides all the basic server functionality that a small business needs.

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Features

Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials includes features that make it possible for everyone in your small business to connection, communicate, collaborate, and store their data effectively, no matter where they are.

Supports larger disksPrevious editions of Essentials had limited abilities to support larger drivers of 2 TB or more. That limitation has been removed.

Remote access for all users, including those using touch devicesEssentials now provides remote access to all users through a gateway. While it lacks some of the more advanced remote features found in other editions, users can still enjoy your server features from anywhere now. Usability has also been improved to accommodate touch-based devices like phones and tablets.

Support more devicesEssentials can now accommodate more users than ever. Previous editions had a hard limit on 25 client machines, the new edition provides access for 25 users and 50 devices, none of which require CALs, saving your business money. It is also easier to switch over to the Standard edition if you find your needs exceed those limits.

Integrates easily with Office 365One of the great enhancements in the R2 edition is the ability to completely integrate with Office 365 subscriptions. This makes it possible to use your Essentials server to collaborate more effectively with all the latest Office tools, which now include real-time development of documents in Word and PowerPoint. Office 365 also provides all the communication tools that are missing on this server, with the ability to easily add Exchange to the server features.

Mobile device managementAnother benefit of integrating your server with Office 365 is the advanced mobile device management through Exchange Active Sync, which allows for syncing and setting standards and permissions or wiping devices as necessary, all from the Essentials dashboard.

Online data backupWindows Server 2012 R2 also includes the ability to start using the cloud more effectively. Data can be stored not just on a device and on the server, but it can all be backed up securely on the cloud with Microsoft Online Backup Service. With that service, you’ll never have to worry about data loss again.

System health reportsGet a picture of how your server is doing with health reports. These give you a snapshot of how your server is doing. They can be accessed anywhere, including on your phone, so you know exactly how the server has been performing.

Run the server on a virtual machineAnother great ability found only in the R2 edition is improved flexibility with how you run the server in the first place. Now, you can run your Windows Server either on a physical or a virtual server. This allows for the ability to have more than one server running at once. It also simplifies disaster recovery, among other uses.
