What’s Different about This Edition?
Users will first notice the sleeker design update, a much-needed improvement from the Office 2003 version. The most monumental change is the addition of Fluent UI, which helps expand suggestions inside the Ribbon, and makes for more intuitive elements throughout Microsoft Office. These changes will all be applied to every Microsoft Office application, giving the entire suite of products an expansive overhaul.
A great example of this is selecting text to change a font style in Word. You’ll see where old toolbars used to be is an automatically populated pane that displays related functions like font color, size, and stylization options (such as bold and italics). This cuts time in navigation across multiple menus to find related capabilities. This new user interface adds intuitive features that left us wondering how we ever survived without them.
XML File Types
Another landmark update for Office 2007 is the switch to XML-based file extensions, which work more efficiently with the new Fluent UI and Ribbon interface. XML files are essentially compressed files (like a .zip) that are also extensible (developers can add capabilities). These applications can store more data within themselves, while simultaneously taking up less space on your machine. XML files are also more secure when handling Macros. File types also change the name of the extensions, so you’ll see Word files now as .docx and Excel files as .xlsx. Microsoft of course has made this transition as smooth as possible, allowing Office 2003 users to read XML files and Office 2007 to read, edit, and convert previous editions.
All applications get upgrades as well, with visual tools, such as more options with shapes, lines, formatting, and 3D rendered graphics.
Quick Styles is a new option that allows users to pick a “theme” and stick with it across multiple programs within Office, making a more consistent presentation across documents.
Outlook gets new anti-phishing and anti-spam filters, giving you a cleaner and more manageable inbox while blocking harmful emails full of links that lead to malware. A “To-Do” function is also thrown in, making it easier to see what’s left in the workday.
Word receives a tool called “Building Blocks” which allows users to save frequently used documents as templates and build upon them later. Word also sees a real-time word count on the lower pane, saving users from finding the function in the menus.
Excel gets enhanced Pivot Table functions, allowing more precise, complex, and accurate data analysis. You’ll also see better graphs and charts in this release of Excel.
