Those who prefer Mac computer and laptops have their justifications and good reasons for their preferences, however, they cannot deny the fact that Microsoft has dominated in the arena of business productivity suites. While there might be some competition from open-sourced competitors and iWork, Apple’s own native productivity suite, the competition remains behind the lead of Microsoft’s world-class lineup of business application software. With Microsoft’s latest edition, released in 2007, Mac users have been waiting for a new update since the one they last got in 2004, a version equivalent to Office 2003. Behind by a year, Microsoft includes beneficial changes to improve usage with Mac interfaces and performance on Apple machines.

Improved Performance

Mac owners will enjoy the fluidity and smoother operation on their Mac devices with enhanced user interface design and operation, something Microsoft also improved upon in its Windows counterparts. Microsoft has done away with the old Rosetta transition layer required to communicate with older Macs running off of PowerPC processors.

Since new Mac machines come with Intel-based processors, those with newer-edition Mac computers will enjoy the enhanced performance. Users with older PowerPC processors should be wary, as performance may not be as smoothly as this version of Office is optimized for Intel-based Apple machines. With a robust and updated version of file type extensions, Microsoft again ups the ante with the introduction of XML based files for all of its applications.

Improved Interface

The user interface also gets enhanced, working smoother with Apple devices and improving the interaction and navigation throughout all of its applications. Microsoft greatly added some intuitive tools to Office 2007 for Windows, and this Mac equivalent gets a few of those additions making it even easier to run through programs. However, not to our liking, some of the more substantial interface changes included in the Windows equivalent didn’t make it to the Mac version.

Helpful tools like the Ribbon and the Fluent User Interface didn’t make Microsoft’s cut in development. The user interface was still updated, and the overall look and feel seem more tight and cohesive, and navigation throughout the applications is easier than it was in the past. It feels more native to a Mac product, aligning with the Apple design language. While we miss the Fluent UI and the Ribbon additions in the Windows edition, it still feels more compatible with Mac machines more so than ever.

What’s Different about Windows 2008 Edition?

The first major change you might observe is the addition of an “x” at the end of filenames. For example, .ppt files change to .pptx and your .doc files change to a .docx file extension. So what’s all the hubbub with this mysterious “x”? The X announces to the world that the file is an XML file. This does a couple of important things to improve on performance: One, it reduces the storage space needed for files by half and upgrades security settings in comparison to the applications included in previous releases. It now takes half, sometimes even as little of a quarter of the hard drive space previously required.

So if you’re creating a spreadsheet in Excel and previously it took up 30MB, you might be looking at a 15MB file now, or even less. Second, security updates now eliminate exploits that used Macro enabled Office files as a backdoor to infect files. This issue has been resolved, and now prompts a security command when downloading files not identical to the XML file. Users can rest easy as this extension has been a smooth transition, allowing users with older editions of Office to view and read files, and current users to edit and review old file types and convert them with no hassle.

Upgraded Applications

The flagship applications, Word, Excel, and Entourage (Apple’s Outlook equivalent) and PowerPoint all get upgrades, and users will love two new features included with the flagship (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint) applications.

The first addition is Elements Gallery, a set of tabs and options set under toolbars in the interface. Elements Gallery displays relevant themes and templates for graphics (like the new SmartArt addition), charts, and WordArt. Each selection in the Elements Gallery also has more options available within each tab, allowing for greater creativity choices.

The second upgrade is the Object Palette, showcasing stylistic options like formatting, charts, clipart, and shapes. You can also import photos from the Object Palette, without having to go through a list of commands.Word gets the familiar and widespread addition of helpful templates.

Quick Tables converts selected lists and data into a graph on the fly with options and preset right at your fingertips. Excel, align with template updates, receives Ledger Sheets which populate common financial usages, like budgets, invoices, or account balancing spreadsheets. You’ll also see enhanced chart creation tools, giving you more formatting options.

Powerpoint users will see a new side panel with a preview of their presentation that updates in real time and allow users to drag and drop slides around to change the order.

Smart Art also allows ideas to be charted and drawn out, showing processes and making presentations more engaging.
Entourage gets a nice boost of user interface touches, such as a task window that shows to-do items for the day, helping you stay on task. You’ll also receive enhanced anti-spam and anti-phishing filters, though hopefully, you’ll never notice them in action.

With these enhancements to all of its Office applications, this makes Office 2008 for Mac a must buy for users with the newer Apple machines.
