Microsoft Word has a history of always including many new features in each and every new release of the software, and the 2016 release is no different. Of course, you can and will still find features from previous releases that you might have heard about, or if used them grown to love, but there are many new capabilities and improvements that allow you to work better than ever before.
As we all know, Word is part of Microsoft’s Office suite, and it has an extremely great integrated experience when used alongside various other Office applications such as Excel or PowerPoint. The seamless integration with Office 365 makes it easy to open, edit and share documents from OneDrive as well as SharePoint. When using OneDrive for example, you can simply click on your Word documents and immediately enter a preview view of it, then quickly edit the document by either using Word Online, a compact, online version of Word or open the document in Word itself, straight from OneDrive.
Tell Me feature
A new, helpful feature is called Tell Me. This is essentially an improved search bar for Word itself, as you can enter in your own words what you want to do, and get quick access to different tools or commands without the need to browse through the different tabs in the Ribbon. Tell Me can offer additional help and resources as well, such as related or suggested tools to your search, or even offer to open up an online help window or use SmartLookup, which is a new feature as well.
When writing documents, the ultimate goal is (usually) to share them with other people, one way or another. From Word 2016, you can easily and directly share your documents with other people by various means. You can simply invite people via entering names or email addresses to either view or edit your document, and even include a little message. There are many options to choose from when sharing: you can decide whether or not someone can edit the document, if changes are automatically shared or not, and you can even get a sharing link or an editing link that can be sent to other people with similar settings. Anyone with your links can access your document and corresponding to the name of the link, can either edit or view it. When you decide to, you can disable these links, thus shutting down the access of those who have it.
Co-authoring in real time
You can edit documents together with your colleagues in real time, see their changes, and even chat with them right inside Word 2016. This can be done cross-platform from any place, allowing you to work with people from all over the world, as long as all parties are connected to the internet.
This feature allows you to select words and quickly look up information about them, such as the definition, how to pronounce it, an example of the word used in a sentence, and even synonyms.
